Enjoy the Summer With These Tips

Summer is the time to step out and have fun. Here are a few tips to protect you from the heat without taking away from the fun.

Protection: It is advisable to use a sunscreen before going out anywhere as this helps protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. The sun’s rays not only burn your skin but could also cause cancer, cataract and other skin diseases. Apply the sunscreen at least half an hour prior to stepping out. Higher the SPF mentioned on the bottle the better the protection, so choose a sunscreen with a high SPF. The minimum SPF should be 15. Reapply the sunscreen if you are out for a long time. You could also carry an umbrella to shield yourself from direct sunlight. Sunglasses help to protect your eyes from the sun.

Clothes: It is time to bring out those minis, shorts and skirts. Clothes that are loose and cotton material are best for summer as they allow free circulation of air. Tight fitting clothes and synthetic materials cause suffocation due to lack of air movement. Light colored clothes are ideal as they do not retain heat. Hydration: Ensure that you drink a lot of water and fluids to avoid dehydration and sun stroke as your body loses more fluid in the summer. Do not wait until you feel thirsty to drink water as that means you are already dehydrated. Drink water at regular intervals. Avoid going out in mid afternoon as that is when the sun is at its maximum. Carry a bottle of water with you while traveling.

Strenuous activities: While summer is the time to be outside and enjoy the sun do not over do it. Strenuous activities during the summer could lead to heat exhaustion or a stroke. If you have to work then take breaks in between and drink plenty of fluids. Wear comfortable clothing and try to limit your activities to early mornings or in the evenings when the sun is not as intense. Alternate work and rest and do not push yourself beyond the limit.

Food: Fried foods, caffeine and foods high in sugar should be avoided. Fruits, salads, vegetables are good for the summer. A diet that is rich in Vitamin C, B E and contains zinc is good for the summer. Do not overindulge in the bar-b-cue in the summer and include a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables available during the season in your diet.
